reactive dogs ~ £60/HOUR

Joyful Paws cover photo

For whatever reason, you may well find yourself living with a dog who is demonstrating what can feel like unpredictable, possibly aggressive 'reactive' behaviour.

This can make life very difficult, even leave you feeling isolated, resulting in guardians avoiding such situations whereby your dog will lunge and/or bark towards other dogs and/or people, as their reactions may cause personal embarrassment, and even distress as the public don't see the sweet dog that you adore and live with at home.

Some dogs simply become unmanageable as they are physically too large and powerful to contain, sometimes causing injury to their guardians as they attempt to hold them back from their 'trigger', which in turn often results in the dog not being taken out for exercise so as to avoid a repeat of such incidents.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR DOG'S BEHAVIOUR

Your dog may behave in a reactive way due to a number of reasons; poor breeding from dogs with unsuitable temperaments, dogs which have suffered abuse at the hands of humans, those raised in unsuitable environments, dogs rescued from overseas where living conditions are atypical to those in the U.K., lack of training, lack of appropriate socialisation as a youngster, even a dog in physical pain may become reactive through fear of being hurt.

In some cases, it's merely that the dog is going through adolescence, some of which become uncontrollably excitable when they see other dogs (or sometimes people, joggers, bicycles, traffic etc.), whilst others find such encounters to be frightening.

By learning to better understand your dog's body language with gaining  knowledge about Calming Signals, we can help you identify how your dog feels when confronted with such situations, and you can then learn how to best help them to improve their reaction in a safe, compassionate manner.
